Z
3 bet
Making a raise after a previous raise. It can also be called a re-raise or over-raise.
Agressive
A way of playing that involves betting and raising frequently on the flop, turn or river.
All-in
Betting all your chips.
American Airlines
The nickname that is used for the pair of Aces (double A).
Ante
The ante is a mandatory bet that players must pay before the cards are dealt. Antes usually appear at a certain blind level in a tournament.
Rainbow
A rainbow flop is a flop where no two cards are the same suit.
Average
The average amount of chips.
Ax
A hand with an ace and any other card.
Back to back
To win a tournament twice in a row.
Bad beat
To lose a hand when you are heavily favoured at the start of the hand.
Bad run
Having a bad luck, bad cycle.
Backdoor
A draw (straight or flush) that needs 2 cards to complete (usually the turn and river).
Bankroll
A player's cash balance. Proper management of this bankroll allows a player to get a better playing experience. The management of this bankroll is called bankroll management.
Big blind
The big blind. A mandatory bet paid by the second person to the left of the button and immediately to the left of the small blind. It is usually twice as large as the small blind.
Bet
A bet, the act of making a bet.
Blank
A card of no interest. When the turn or river has no influence on the players hands.
Blinds
Compulsory bets placed by one or more players before the cards are dealt.
Bluff
Making your opponents think you are playing very well, in order to scare them into giving up their hand.
Board
Cards common to all players. The flop, turn and river.
Box
Synonymous with all-in.
Bounty
The bounty received by a player for the elimination of one or more players in specific tournaments.
Bubble
The seat of the last person who will not be paid in a tournament. Once the bubble has burst, all players still in the tournament will receive money. A place that everyone wants to avoid.
Busto
A player who is eliminated from a tournament.
Calling station
A term for a player who calls all the bets. This is a pejorative term.
Cash game
A type of poker game where players play for their money. As opposed to tournaments in which players can be eliminated. Anyone participating in a cash game can sit out and leave the game at any time. Blinds in cash games never increase.
Cave
The amount of money required to sit at a cash game table.
Check
The action of not betting and still staying in the hand. This action is only possible if no one has bet before you in that round. In French the term is "parole".
Check - raise
Checking and then raising after one of the opponents has bet.
Chip count
A ranking of the players still in the tournament according to their chip counts.
Chip leader
The player leading the tournament in chips.
Chips
The chips.
Coin flip
Heads or tails. A duel between two players who have approximately the same percentage chance of winning. Close to a 50/50.
Couleur
A term to define one of the four symbols in the deck (clubs, spades, hearts, diamonds). Flush does not mean red or black. It also means the combination of 5 cards of the same symbol.
Cut-off
Refers to one of the player's positions at the table. The cut-off is positioned just before the button or dealer.
Deal
An arrangement between two or more players in a tournament. It usually takes place at the final table of a tournament. It consists of a split to distribute the total money left to be won according to different calculations and parameters. The parameters can be the chips the players have, the level of the players or the desires of each player. The players must therefore debate among themselves to find an arrangement that corresponds to everyone's desires.
Dealer
The person who deals the cards. In live games, the dealer is often replaced by a croupier. The position is represented by a button. This button rotates from player to player in a clockwise direction with each hand. The dealer will speak last from the flop, and before the small and big blind, before the flop.
Deck
The deck of cards.
Double up
To double up on your chips.
Drawing dead
When no more cards can come in to win in that hand and there are still cards to draw.
Early
The early positions at the table.
Family pot
A pot contested by 3 or more players.
Field
The set of players in a tournament. We can talk about field size (a field of 800 players) or field level (the field level is very high).
Fish
An expression that refers to a player of a lower level.
Float
A strategy of paying an opponent's bet on the flop with the goal of bluffing them later to steal the pot.
Flop
The name of the first three community cards revealed in the centre of the table for players after the first round of betting.
Flush draw
To draw a flush.
Fold
To fold from the hand, turn in your cards, fold and wait for the next hand.
Freeroll
A freeroll is a free tournament where no money is required to participate. Money can be added to the prize pool by the tournament organizer. These tournaments are popular with beginner players.
Freezout
A tournament where it is not possible to re-enter once eliminated. As opposed to a rebuy tournament.
GG
Abbreviation for "good game".
GL
Abbreviation for 'good luck'.
Gutshot
A straight draw that is completed with the middle card.
Heads-up
A situation in poker where only 2 players are playing against each other. This can be the final stage of a tournament, a 1-on-1 tournament, or a cash game. It can also be used to refer to the point in a hand where the players are 1 vs 1.
High
The player's hand is judged by his highest card as he does not even have a pair. The lowest poker combination.
High roller
A tournament with a high buy-in.
High stakes
A game with high stakes.
Hi-jack
The position of a player at the table. Hi-jack is located 2 seats to the left of the button.
HU
Abbreviation for heads-up.
ITM
"In the Money" the point at which all remaining players in the tournament will leave with a prize.
Kicker
Name given to the card that accompanies your best card or combination. It is used to break a tie.
Limper
The act of simply paying the big blind in the first round of betting. Limpers are players who have entered the game in this way.
Full hand
Translation of full house (three of a kind + pair).
Multiway
Another name for the family pot.
MTT
Multi table tournament, a tournament where there are several tables.
No limit
One of the variants of no-limit poker. At any time, a player can decide to bet all of their chips to go all-in.
Nuts
Being in possession of the 'nuts' means you have the best possible play and cannot lose the hand.
Odds
The odds. This is the calculation that compares what you have to win (the amount of the pot) versus what you have to bet to try to win it (the amount of the opponent's bet).
Offsuit
Cards that are not of the same suit (spades and clubs).
Orbit
A full board turn.
Overlay
An overlay is when the guaranteed prize pool of a tournament is greater than the combined sum of all buy-ins paid by the players. They are popular with players because they are advantageous in terms of mathematical expectation of winnings.
Over pair
The pair you have in your hand is higher than the highest card on the board. For example: You have QQ and the flop 4 9 J. You have an overpair.
Parole
The French name for 'check'. It is a no-bet round.
Passive
A style of player who never raises. They only pay the opponent's bets.
Polarized
A perceived hand in the opponent's hand range that is either very weak or very strong. In short, he either has the maximum play (the nuts) or a big bluff.
Pot
The total chip stakes made by the players during the hand constitute the pot in the middle of the table. It is won by the person with the best hand at the end of the hand. It can also be won by the last person in the hand if everyone has folded. In case of a tie the pot is divided equally between the players.
Pre-Flop
A term that indicates all the action that takes place before the flop arrives on the board.
Prizepool
The total prize pool of a tournament.
Rake
The amount of money taken at the cash game table from each pot or tournament entry. This money is used to fund the casino, ring or poker room.
Rebuy
Buying back chips once you are eliminated from a tournament to get back into it. The rebuy period is usually limited in time. The number of rebuys can be limited or unlimited.
Wheel
A straight A-2-3-4-5
Run it twice
When the all-in players decide to draw 2 boards. Depending on the progress of the hand, only the turn and river may be drawn twice. This option helps to smooth out the variance.
Runner-up
The person who finishes 2nd in a tournament.
Rush
A player's lucky streak.
Satellite
A type of tournament that aims to qualify for a larger tournament. Some satellites may be free.
Set
Three cards of the same number.
Shark
A shark is the term used for a very good player.
Showdown
The moment when players reveal their cards after the last round of betting to determine the winner of the pot.
Side pot
When a player is already all-in, and the other players want to continue betting he creates a side pot. The player who is all-in will only be able to win the initial pot he invested in. There can be several side pots.
Sit out
To get up from the table. When a player is no longer active.
Split
To split the pot.
Stack
The chips a player has to bet.
Straight
A straight consists of any five cards of two or more suits in sequence of rank.
Tanker
The time taken by a player to make a decision, sometimes a long one.
FT
The abbreviation used to define the final table.
Draw
When a player needs one or two cards to complete his deck. Example: He has 7 and 8. The flop is 9 - 10 - 4. He is in a straight draw and the Jack or 6 would make his draw.
Top pair
When you have made a pair with the highest card on the flop.
Trips
Three of a kind consisting of two community cards and one card in the player's hand.
Turbo
A type of tournament where the structure is fast (blind levels increase at a rapid rate).
Turn
Fourth community card of the board.
Under The Gun
Position of a player directly to the left of the big blind. The first to speak from the flop. A tricky position at the table.
UTG
Short for "Under The Gun". This is the first player to bet around the table.
Walk
When all the players have folded by the time they reach the big blind.
